Professional: Went to Yale, majoring in math & philosophy, took a break for Peace Corps, providing agricultural development outreach in Nepal. MS at Cornell in Civil & Environmental Engineering, then PhD at Swansea Wales UK. Consultant (private, then governmental) on water resources issues first in Houston, TX, and now in the Seattle area for past 30 years. Presently working for US Geological Survey, modeling groundwater issues in Washington State. Still use some of the math learned in Mr. Holzhauser’s AP class.
Personal: married in 1972 to a friend of Patty Richards (!) in Cleveland. Had sons Peter (born in UK) and Chris (born in TX); they now live in San Diego and New York City and are successful though still growing into their careers (graphic art, and photography / film production), and Chris has even produced a book! Divorced unhappily in 1995., then after years of frustrated dating, met Nancy White in 2008, a retired family practice physician, while singing together in a church choir, and married in 2012. Music is an important aspect of our lives: besides still singing in a choir (and loving the making of music!), we attend symphony, choral, and opera events, and have friends and relatives participating in some of the groups. Seattle is a real cultural mecca, especially for music. Also, both of us have family in Seattle (including Nancy’s grandchildren), and enjoy getting together with relatives. We do expect to travel as we have more time — we visited UK last September and even stayed with Patty Richards Armstrong.
Nancy and I love living in the Pacific Northwest — especially the long summer days and nights, the mild climate, the beautiful mountains and forests, the lakes, rivers, Puget Sound, and the Pacific Coast. (However, the rainy, dark, winters are less attractive.) We still go hiking and camping. Perhaps because of the beauty of nature here, I have a special concern about the environment, and in particular global warming / climate change and the impact of its denial.
