Draeger!!! Loved that place. Worked there the summer of 95. It was great that it was close to the movie theater so saw a lot of classmates that summer. We were allowed to eat all the candy and ice cream we wanted while on the job, but we lost weight with all that because we were so busy! A few of us went there in O4 when we were there for the 40 yr reunion. Glad we did. They told us that Walgreens bought the whole strip and they would have to close. They had rented the space for the many many years they were there. The candies and ice cream were made in the basement. If they moved they would have to update all their equipment and they could not afford that. It was $60,000 years ago when they opened so you could imagine how much it would be now. It was the son and his wife that we talked to. They were sad, and so were we. The sundaes we had were wonderful as always and now a wonderful memory.

Draegar's hot fudge sundae, never to be forgotten, along with the Vogue movie theater. Distinctly recall seeing "Psycho" there on a Friday night. Hough Bakery is always the first thing mentioned on the "Growing up in Shaker Heights" Facebook page. Rhapsodies have beem written there. Coconut bars run a close second to birthday cakes for me. Geraci's, of course. Pepperoni and double cheese, please. It's the Shaker movie theater from early childhood that has the strongest claim on me: 25 cents to get in, another quarter for popcorn and Jujubees. I had  one of my first real dates (boy/car/"art " film at the Heights theater. The L-Shaped Room or maybe David and Lisa. Yikes.

Starting right after Thanksgiving (sometimes earlier) we start hearing Christmas/holiday music on the radio.  Whenever I hear "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson I have flash backs (pleasant memories) of being in the Onaway gym doing that heel toe dance taught to us by our gym teacher (the same one who taught my father! -- he graduated in 1939).  I think the Onaway gym teacher also taught at Boulevard.  Did the rest of you at the other Shaker elementary schools also learn that dance and smile when you hear the music?

I live in New York, where there is a bakery called Zaro's. They sell a cookie called 'black and white from Shaker Heights'. It is a 1/2 vanilla and 1/2 chocolate cookie. I wonder if they were ever in Draeger's?

Pat,  I have strong memory of the same thing.....was I dancing with you?  Remember racing down the aisles, with parents watching, always in step with the music...

Bill, we danced as a group -- must have been at the "Christmas Pageant."  I'm wondering if the other elementary schools did the same thing.

Great food memories. Going back to Boulevard days, does anyone remember Clark's at Shaker Square?  I loved going there because of the huge treasure chest of toys.  If you finished your dinner - so you always did - you could pick out your favotite toy on the way out.  Wasn't there a restaurant almost across the street from Geraci's called either The Wagon Wheel or Town & Country.  Good lobster and duck.

Marc. I recognize Bonnie Wilson (Erickson).  And with regard to food, does anyone remember the frostie like drink in basement of I think it was the old May Company downtown? I remember riding the rapid downtown to shop and get the frostie. See you all in a week! Betsy

And before Draegers it was called Malley's or something like that . Great fudge sundaes. Good for after the movies but before that used to ride my bike there to get a sundae.

We loved all the Hough treats mentioned. All special. A real loss.

The Wagon Wheel owner would sing "pour anniversaries....." Cannot remember the rest for birthdays.  A good but not great restaurant.  Best we had at the time. Great memories. Also a restaurant that was across the street called the Shaker Tavern. Do you remember the Virginian in Van Aken shopping center?  The original Mawby's was in Cedar Center. We went there often.

also the Hickory Grill on Short Vincent. Part of the mob but excellent.  The Golden Bowl in Little Itay all memorable places for family events.

Thanks to to all where we can obtain some our memories and great food

First I would like to thank all who are taking the time to organize and run Shaker 64. Quite honestly I was never in an upper tier clique and wasnt a nerd....just one of the 70 percent who ground out the daily high school experience. Through this site I have connected with a few people who I knew in the the day....also unfortunetly a few of the people I knew have passed. Which brings me to my point......I have had a great life.....just the right amount of challenges and rewards......ups and downs. I had intended on attending this reunion.I did go to the last one but had to leave before diner.......there are a few things on my bucket list that need to be attended to and one is riding my motorcyle to the Stugis Rally which is the same weekend as the Shaker Reunion......so I will be thinking of this event from Stugis South Dakota and if I ever slow down will be attending the next reunion......I wish everyone good health.....the rest is just window dressing......

No one has mentioned Little Italy in detail.

Ohio had the quaint law that permitted us to drink three two beer at 18 and we could also drive to new York state and drink anything. Remember the Interstate was open and the New York border only 90 minutes away.

Any way back to Little Italy. I was 18 in December of Senior year and there were these two bars we would go to. One was called the Library and the other THE. There also were a few daring seniors who rented an apartment there for parties and the less I say the better.

Tonight we were out to dinner and I had a piece of white on white cake.It reminded me of a bakery there called Corbo's (spelling?). But their cake was perfection. It was a white layer cake with thick whipped cream and fresh strawberries layered in between. And of course this lovely rich white frosting. It was always ordered for special family occasions such as my grandmother's 100th birthday in 1972.

Wow!  All my old favorites!!  In fact, come next Friday, I am dragging my wife to Geraci’s for a pepperoni pizza.

For those of you who didn’t know, Draeger’s actually shut down the weekend of our 40th reunion.  Freddie had inherited the store from his dad (who had acquired it from Malley’s), and he was simply tired of running it.  I am glad his chocolates are still available.

To me, the corned beef at Corky & Lenny’s was better than at Solomon’s.  Mawby’s was ruined when George got rid of the griddle.  And I loved Clark’s ($0.95 for a main plate with two sides / $1.45 to include an appetizer and dessert), mostly at the time for the toy chest.

Who would imagine that Stouffers would go from the frozen food in the chest next to the cashier to become a fast-food giant?

And finally, the Aurora Restaurant’s spaghetti sauce.  Is the packaged stuff as good as the original?  I have dreamed of that inky dark sauce for decades.

And yes, I do remember Mawby's and the original one as well. We didn't move into Shaker until second semester of 6th grade so we went to the original one a lot. It was one of my Dad's favorites.

Thanks Dana for resurrecting that taste!  Frosted malt.... mmmm. I remember the shape of the glass and the feel as it cascaded down your throat.  Did anyone else squash pennies on the Rapid Transit tracks?  And watching Ghoulardi on Friday nights?  My prom gown (I went with Scott Fields) cost $35 and they had to call my mother to get her permission for me to charge it.  I could draw it today. Got my shoes died to match and my hair was done in a French twist for the occasion.  I even remember my outift for the outing... where was that? The next day.  So many memories!  Will miss you all and if anyone asks where I am, tell 'em I'm in the bathroom and they just missed me.
