SHHS NYC CHRISTMAS BREAK TRIP 1961
Joe - THANKS for mentioning these NYC trips -- I have such fond memories of mine - have often mentioned to my children and grandchildren. I had not remembered that they happened every year, but I went in 1961, our sophomore year - Dec 26-31.
Joe's post in this forum sent me to my high school scrapbook - forgive me for oversharing (TMI in today's lingo), but perhaps someone might actually be interested, who knows?!
Alene Weisman (now Alana Zachary) and I were together - and I recall we had much time to wander the streets of Manhattan -- on our own! As you can see from the attached letter (I am not a packrat, I am an "archivist"!), the cost for the entire trip was $91! Note in the letter "need your own food money"...
I had celebrated my 15th birthday just 3 days before - unbelievable that 4 teachers could "risk" taking a group of SIXTY (60) high school kids from suburban Shaker Heights to New York! No way that could happen now (even pre-pandemic) -- think of all the things that could have gone wrong!
I believe Alene's and my first dinner was at La Petite Marmite, which I think was near the hotel - who knew from French food? Another dinner was at Cavahagh's on W.23, where my notes on the menu indicate I hadthe Fried Jumbo Shrimp entree ($3.65) and Chocolate Chip Ice Cream ($.65). I had the Lobster Sandwich Luncheon one day at Stouffers op of the Six's (sic) on 5th Ave, and Homemade Ravioli for dinner at Leone's on 48th (Per my notes, "good food -- poor service").
One evening I dined with my uncle, aunt, and cousin at Toots Shor on 52nd St. No record of what I ate, but "good food - fair service"...
Per my high school scrapbook - aside from what is mentioned in the letter, we stayed at the New Yorker Hotel at 34th and 8th. we visited St John the Divine, and I climbed all the way to the head of the Statue of Liberty.
We saw "Carnival!" at the Imperial Theatre, directed and choreographed by Gower Champion and starring Anna Maria Alberghetti. Stars of the show we saw at Radio City were Ray Bolger, Tommy Sands, Annette (before she became Annette Funicello), and Ed Wynn - and - further down in the casting was Ann Jilliann.
This was my first ever trip to New York, but for sure not my last... I can't wait until life returns to "normal?" and theaters can reopen, and actors and dancers can perform again - live and in person - and we can sit in theaters once more...
Ahhh - those were the days!
