Does anyone know how Tom is?

This morning I got an email from Al Nusbaum. He said he spoke with Tom yesterday. Tom sounded weak but improved. Tom was hungry and complained about not getting food in rehab. Tom's voice mailbox is filled so you can't leave a message. If he is awake, he might pick up the phone. Lenny and Terri Janis visited Tom last week and sent me a picture from the hospital. Tom was smiling for the camera. Another good sign.

All in all, encouraging but there is a long road ahead for recovery.

Tom Furst called me this past weekend.  HE SOUNDS GREAT!  What an attitude!  He is aware of how close he came to not surviving, but is well aware of all the care and support flooding into him.  Tom has a long road to recovery so keep him in your thoughts.  Paige

Here is an email that I have received from Harry Exline's wife.

"This is Hark Exline's wife, Kris.  Herk was in the hospital for 2 weeks starting on February 2 for complications from an inforection.  Since then he has been at Anna Maria of Aurora for rehabilitation.  Now, due to the restrictions of isolation at nursing facilities he is unable to receive visitors.  I have a simple request - if anyone would like to do so would you please send him a card or a note to let him know that the outside world is thinking of him?  My 99 year old mother is also at the same facility and I hear from their voices the loneliness this difficult time in all of our lives can bring to those confined to a single room.

Herk's address is:

HerkExline

#111, 889 North Aurora Road

Aurora, Ohio  44202

Thanks so much and please remember other shut-ins in your communities!"

Please keep in mind that this Forum is a good place to catch us all up on our lives!

I'm sorry to have to tell you that one of our favorite gym teachers, Barbara Biederman Lebit, died on March 15.  She had an identical twin who was just as nice as she was!  I used to bump into both of them a lot and the twin who wasn't our gym teacher was always very friendly and nice.  I could never tell them apart so the twin just put up with me for years!  Pretty much all funerals are no longer public events because of the coronavirus so I'm guessing that sending a card to her family would be appropriate if you choose to.  I'll get that information so if anyone is interested, please call me at 216-288-4506 and I can pass it on to you.

Thanks for keeping us so well informed. Here is a link to Barbara's obituary. She continued to be an energetic and active leader in the community.

Miss Biederman was my home room teacher.  Our home room was the home ec room.  She was little is stature and took control of us through a smile rather than the more traditional methods. She married Ed Lebit who was a tax attorney with the Mc Carthy Savransky and Greewald firm.  He was as nice as she.  Fond memories.

Wow - just read the obit, and realize she must have been just out of grad school when we were in high school.

Thanks for sharing, and best wishes to all my classmates to stay healthy ... and sane,  Yet another part of history that I would prefer to read about than live through~

Thanks to Betsy for her two words of wisdom- "prayer works." Indeed these days we need to be reminded the hard way.

I am grateful for the sharing of information about Mrs Lebit. The obituary told the story of a beautiful person. As a male student I would not have had limited opportunity to know her.

And Nancy Krupnick, I love that picture you use. What a nice shot of you and your husband with Big Ben in London!

Stay home and healthy.

I second any and all motions for everyone to stay home and stay safe. I'm following my own advise and am hunkered down with my daughter and her family here in Visby, Sweden. That puts my "social distance" to my apartment in Cleveland at about 4,000 miles. Oh, well. I'll get home eventually, but based on current events, I'm in no hurry. Stay well, wherever you are, and stay put.

HELLO AT LAST!!

We are back in business!  A very long and arduous story, but our website provider merged with another website provider and our bill payment which I have set to automatically renuew did not renew and I was given every reason for the problem but that one.  Hopefully, our website woes are now totally a thing of the past and I look forward to many years of uninterrupted service!  Thank you to everyone of you (and there were lots of you!) who let me know that there was a problem.  I now have a direct person to deal with so please let me know right away by email (EvieBraman@aol.com) if you are having any trouble with Shaker64.com and hopefully it will be solved immediately.

I am sorry to tell you that Tom Osher died of Lymphona in August.

Hoping for better news to pass on in the future!  Please, everyone, keep writing about the news in your lives, it's always fun to find out what's going on with everyone!!

Happy September Holidays to everyone!

Evie

I am devistated to hear that Tom Osher died.  We were best friends in school and stayed in touch fairly often.  He was a wonderful friend and an even better person.  He will be missed.

Some may have already heard this. I heard last night from Stence White that John Robson died Tuesday after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
John had been in a care facility near Cleveland for the last few years as the disease took its toll.

Posting the obituary for John Robson reminds me of the Christmas trip to NYC in 1963/

In those dark distant days of our youth Mr Heinlein would lead a trip to NYC the day after Christmas and then back home on New Year's We went by train to NYC and arrived in time for dinner at Jack Dempsey's Steak House on Times Square.

John Robson was on the trip along with Stence White, Gerry Goetz, Doug Heinlien, and John Garnett. I am sure others of you were on the trip and can add to this recollection.

The other highlight I recall was seeing "Charade" at Radio City Music Hall. Of course we also had a great  show witht the Rockettes.

The trip back was also by train but I recall it being an evening trip and very cold. We were  delayed and of course alll was dark outside.

Please add if you remember more.

Joe

SHHS NYC CHRISTMAS BREAK TRIP 1961

Joe - THANKS for mentioning these NYC trips -- I have such fond memories of mine - have often mentioned to my children and grandchildren. I had not remembered that they happened every year, but I went in 1961, our sophomore year - Dec 26-31.

Joe's post in this forum sent me to my high school scrapbook - forgive me for oversharing (TMI in today's lingo), but perhaps someone might actually be interested, who knows?!

Alene Weisman (now Alana Zachary) and I were together - and I recall we had much time to wander the streets of Manhattan -- on our own! As you can see from the attached letter (I am not a packrat, I am an "archivist"!), the cost for the entire trip was $91!  Note in the letter "need your own food money"...

I had celebrated my 15th birthday just 3 days before - unbelievable that 4 teachers could "risk" taking a group of SIXTY (60) high school kids from suburban Shaker Heights to New York!  No way that could happen now (even pre-pandemic) -- think of all the things that could have gone wrong!

I believe Alene's and my first dinner was at La Petite Marmite, which I think was near the hotel - who knew from French food? Another dinner was at Cavahagh's on W.23, where my notes on the menu indicate I hadthe  Fried Jumbo Shrimp entree ($3.65) and Chocolate Chip Ice Cream ($.65). I had the Lobster Sandwich Luncheon one day at Stouffers op of the Six's (sic) on 5th Ave, and Homemade Ravioli for dinner at Leone's on 48th (Per my notes, "good food -- poor service").

One evening I dined with my uncle, aunt, and cousin at Toots Shor on 52nd St.  No record of what I ate, but "good food - fair service"...

Per my high school scrapbook - aside from what is mentioned in the letter, we stayed at the New Yorker Hotel at 34th and 8th. we visited St John the Divine, and I climbed all the way to the head of the Statue of Liberty.

We saw "Carnival!" at the Imperial Theatre, directed and choreographed by Gower Champion and starring Anna Maria Alberghetti.  Stars of the show we saw at Radio City were Ray Bolger, Tommy Sands, Annette (before she became Annette Funicello), and Ed Wynn - and - further down in the casting was Ann Jilliann.

This was my first ever trip to New York, but for sure not my last... I can't wait until life returns to "normal?" and theaters can reopen, and actors and dancers can perform again - live and in person - and we can sit in theaters once more...

Ahhh - those were the days!

I should have added a while back that the 1963 trip followe that same format as the 1961 trip- I recall St John the Divine aka St John the Unfinished. And also the same hotel and time at Cavanaugh's restaurant. I suppose kids today would think this was quaint now but it seemed a great adventure then.

Mhi folks. Just started reading this site. Either I have "oldtimers" or as I like to refer it as alte-kakerosis, or I was invisible. Coming from the Hebrew Academy, i was not part of any group . I never felt a part of the social scene. Having a  handicapped twin brother at the same school, my ecperience was so different than many of you. Not filled with memories of friends, but instead, invisible And oblivious
