I don't think so...

Speaking of people looking alike I never though Rick Blaine and I looked alike.

But the 64 Gristmill team reversed our photos. I follow him alphabetically. I never noticed it until a reunion years ago when my name was attached to his photo as a name tag. Later I finally looked in the Gristmill and saw the inversion.

I am sure neither of us was harmed and no one has tried to arrest me or kiss me thinking I was Rick Blaine.

PS our daughter gave us tickets to see Hamilton on Feb 22 next. It's an appropriate way to spend what used to be known as George Washington's Birthday.

Stumbled on Shaker Web Page, all previous messages went into my "spam delete" file. From the latest pictures it looks like many of us, as we approach or pass 70, start to look alike; balding or bald, beards of gray or white (that's the men of course ha. ha..) and the women a little more matronly than I remember from Shaker High. That said, it's easy to mistake one of us for another.

I am living in Indio, California out in the desert near Palm Springs where yesterday it hit 122 degrees in the shade. Moved around the country as a teacher, principal and picked up adjunct professor gigs here and there. Was for about eight years  the principal of Shaker Middle School (Byron Junior High) and it was a disaster! Should have remembered the old saying..."You can't go home again" and in my case it was true. I should have done more research about the schools and changes since we graduated in '64. Still working full time. Hired by a private high school and teach physics and chemistry and thus far have no intention of retiring unless I hit the lottery.

Any Shaker grads living in the Palm Springs area? Would like to touch base.

I recently saw this and I wanted to share it with everyone.

Dale Wayne Sontag of Thousand Oaks, Calif., died July 3, 2016. He was 69.

Born in Cleveland on Nov. 22, 1946, to Lew and Rose Sontag, Dale was a graduate of Shaker Heights High School’s class of 1964. He attended The Ohio State University. Dale worked for Firestone and Parnelli Jones, and was then self-employed in auto sales for the remainder of his career. He enjoyed golf, classic cars, and following both the Cleveland Indians and the Los Angeles Dodgers in baseball.

Dale is survived by his wife of nearly 47 years, Barbara Sontag; daughters, Deb Floyde (Michael) of Newbury Park, Calif. and Samantha Sontag of Thousand Oaks; granddaughter, Shayna Floyde and granddog, Joey Floyde. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Howard Sontag.

Funeral services were held July 6 at Mount Sinai Memorial Park in Simi Valley, Calif

I'm very sorry to tell everyone that Lee Handel died on Thursday, August 25.  He had been very courageous in his battle against Parkinsons and cancer.for the last eleven years and had been very lucky for the love, devotion and care of his wife Amy.

Evie~

Thanks for sharing this sad news; I don't think I realized how long Lee had been ill.  I found this link to an obituary: http://obits.cleveland.com/obituaries/cleveland/obituary.aspx?n=lee-handel&pid=181201898&fhid=2098

I have only the fondest memories of Lee, from first grade at Lomond School (picture attached -- I am lower left and Lee is upper right) through graduation from SHHS.

So sad to learn of Lee's passing.  He was quite a lovely gent.  I hate to read notices of OUR passing.  Wow, mortatlity. Don't we feel as though we have so much more to do?  I do.  Maybe it's the AGE we're turning or have turned. It's a bit scary.....  To reiterate that old cliche, where did the time go?

I'm sad to hear that Lee has left us and grateful that I interacted with him even briefly at the reunion. We were never close friends but he, as all of you, was and still is a permanent character in my memory of school years. Rest in Peace, Lee.

Thanks Evie for the information on Lee. Haven't seen him recently, but whenever I did it was like we were best friends. Really a class guy.

Evie......Thank you for posting this.  I talked to Lee a few years ago and tried to meet up with him when he passed through Copenhagen, but didnt manage.  He was my savior in kindergarten.  The teacher, a horriblemean person, thought we were fighting. We werent but she punished  my by making me stand  in the wastebasket.  Lee joined me in solidarity!  We remained friends all thecway thru highschool.

Dana this picture brings back great memories. Our teacher, Miss Cook, was absolutely one of the best teachers I ever had.  Reconnected with her grade 7 and " helped" at the day camp she had at her farm.

Thank you Evie for letting us know about this sad news. I just saw a picture of Lee at a function he was attending. Gosh these notices sure do hit hard and yet I feel as though we are all too young to be experiencing classmates passing away. My memory of Lee was that he always made me snicker and then laugh out loud.

Evie, thanks for sharing this shocking news, and Dana, thanks for the photo of Miss Cook's first grade class at Lomond. Yours truly is three photos to your right. Lee was a great friend all through Lomond, Byron, and the high school. My condolences to his loved ones, and best wishes to all my fellow alums.

It was a very sad day. I've known Lee since first grade.  Remember playing ball with him at the triangle at Gridley and Lomond  with Jimmy Brown, Ned Overbeke, Dick Mears and others.  I spent some time with him in Cleveland about a year ago, knew he had Parkinson's, but didn't realize his cancer had returned.  I always enjoyed his cornball humor and obviously others did too.  At the funeral, Lee's son started the eulogy of his Dad by repeating the first joke he heard him tell.  It was about  one old lady asking another what she thought of Red China (the response:  it would probably go well with a yellow tablecloth).  Lee was a fine man who will be missed.

Gary, Judi, and Alan~

Indeed, in the first grade Lomond School picture I contributed to memorialize Lee -- Alan is three photos to my right. But additionallly  Gary and Judi are right next to each other, top row, positions three and four respectively, in the top row!  When we were SIX!

Judi -- I never reconnected with Miss Cook, but Dec 4 of our first grade year was when my father died, and I cannot imagine any teacher who could have been more sensitive and caring to the very shy and very young little girl I was (I was only 5 1/2 at the time - didn't even turn 6 until Dec 23),  I still have the two children's books of poetry she gave me, along with only the most loving memories of Miss Cook.

So sorry to hear about Dale and Lee.  Unfortunately I do not see any mention about the death of Wayne Rudolf.  For those of you who didn't know, Wayne passed away prior to Dale on June 16, 15 days prior to his 70th birthday.  He lived in Marietta, GA.  Three great guys I only have fond memories of.

I do remember Miss Cook.  She took us to a farm (hers?) at the end of the year.  A very nice lady.

All this death is not a good trend!  We've lost a lot of good people.  I guess we need to enjoy every moment.

I got to Lee Handel's funeral Sunday at Suburban Temple/Kol Ami (Kol Ami means "All People", symbol of the synagogue's very cosmopolitan tradition), about 15 minutes late. It was a large turnout I'm happy to say. His wife and the rabbi displayed a sense of humor, that seemed very appropriate. Lee had an abiding sense of humor, which served him well in his decade of serious dual illness. Much gratitude got expressed for his life. The rabbi spoke of his sense of duty and generosity. I saw and greeted Jimmy Brown exiting the service, and I think James Kahn. (I remember Kahn as one of the more refined members of our class, tennis club/team, and what I perceived as cultural sensitivity) There were probably others from our class of '64 whom I did not recognize.

I am sad to hear about Lee's passing.   A group of about 15 former classmates meet for lunch about every month or so, and about six weeks ago I sat next to Lee who felt good enough to attend.  I hadn't seen him for 40 years except for the reunion, but we talked about things like how we walked to Lomond together most days, and played ball on the "Triangle" near our homes. Two days later the Jewish News had an article about him with photos honoring him for his work and his foundation  "InMotion".   At the lunch we talked about everything but himself.  He seemed really happy to be with a group of old friends.  At the next lunch, we were told he was in the hospital.

Hello Larry. It has been a long time since I have seen you. Back then you were not Larry but mouse. I think you look younger now. Nice shirt, bought one just like it when I moved to Florida, only wore it once. I agree with you on Lee. Great guy. Hope you are doing well. Go Buckeyes
