Thanks Evie and the usual suspects. I am certain it will be a great weekend. Its hard to think its 60 years ago. I have found we have a camaraderie and esprit de corps that as a Marine I would compare to that band of brothers in some ways. I have found some very loyal friends who have been a great comfort and source of wisdom in recent years. Thanks to them.
I have been meaning to post some happy recollections from childhood that may prove a short diversion from all the tragic news in the papers just now. I sometimes want to watch the Muppets or Sesame Street than watch the news. I once read that some old folks used to do the same or watch Mr.Rogers for the same reason.
I suppose we all recall some favorite TV show we watched. For some reason I now recall Howdy Doody which started in 1947. We got our first TV in 1949. Hence I suppose why I recall it. It was on a long time retiring in 1960. Who recalls the human cast:
Buffalo Bob Smith, Chief Thunderthud, Clarabelle (whose original actor was Bob Keeshan who would be Captain Kangaroo on CBS), Princss Summerfall Winterspring
And then the puppets like Howdy Doody, Dilly Dally, Mr Bluster and the Flubadub. And others.
Please add your memories.
And of course there is always I Love Lucy. At one time my wife and I could watch any episode at the beginning and know what was going to happen. The writers were brilliant but then they had Lucille Ball to execute so well. Everyone has a favorite episode. I aways recall two. There is the time Lucy get drunk rehearsing to do the VightyVeetyVegamin ad, an alcohol based liquid vitamin tonic (remember Geritol). The favorite line was "And its so tasty too."
The other one would be from the season they spent in Hollywood while Ricky tried his hand at making a movie. The episode is one where her friend Caroline Appleby comes to visit and Lucy pretends to be various stars like John Wayne and Harpo Marx. Caroline "lost" her glasses and had poor vision. But the real Harpo finds out and comes into the apartment and catches Lucy playing Harpo. What follows is a seen where Lucy has to pretend to be Harpo's reflection and repeat eveything he does at the same time. The timing is perfect until Harpo drops his hat and it counces back and Lucy's does not. It repeats a seen from a Marx Brothers movie in the 1930s where Harpo and Groucho do the same scene.
Harpo could have inspired Clarabelle because neither spoke on screen.
So what was your favoroite episode?
Thanks
